Correspondence among members of the Averill family of Rockland, Maine, discussing family matters and day to day details of the late nineteenth century coasting trade. Primarily contains brief letters to Margaret Averill from her husband, Frank B. Averill. Collection also includes letters to Margaret from Frank's brother Cyrus B. and son Albert as well as a few other family members and friends.

Capt. Frank Averill and his wife, Margaret resided in Rockland, Maine. Frank commanded several coasting schooners including the Union, Lucy Ames and Benton. They carried lime from Rockport, returning with available cargoes such as coal and salt from New York, Baltimore, Providence and Boston. From the description of Averill family papers. 1864-1916. Frank Averill was born Tom Wittick, the son of Ben Wittick and Frances Averill. He married May Wickham from Phoenix, Arizona in 1907, continued to work mining claims in the Huron, Arizona area, and was shot in Prescott, Arizona in 1910.
